Persuasive essay about social media
Nowadays, many people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, and so on. Since the Internet has rapidly propagated, social media has progressed rapidly. The widespread use of mobile devices to access the internet gradually transformed the nature of our social interactions. Most people use smart phones, i-phones or mobile internet devices to easily access social network. It helps us contact friends, family, and other people even if they live far away. Social media has many advantages; nevertheless, it can be abused in moments by young children if we are not careful, because they can easily access social media. We need to understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
In discussions of social media, one controversial issue has been social media is good to use for children. On the one hand, some people argue social media is okay for children to use freely. On the other hand, other people even contend social media is for children to use with regulation. My own view is that we should understand and regulating the use of social media by young children, because overusing social media can create strong addictions, develop mental or physical disorders, and waste our time.
First of all, social media, such as Facebook, are very addictive. Especially, people who are lonely can become easily addicts. Human is social animal, so they want to make relationship with others. People would say drug or alcohol is more addictive and harmful for children than social media; social media addiction is not a big problem. Unfortunately, it is not true. Social media can lead to compulsive behavior. A report of the social media addiction by University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business says: “There is evidence to show as well that social behaviours like hugs and smiles are associated with dopamine release … it’s possible that social media is pleasurable and becomes addictive via the dopamine mechanism just as drugs or alcohol can(Fekken).” In the light of these facts, surely social media can make addicts, and it is hard to escape. The problem is most people who have an addiction to social media and do not even realize it.
Children, also, can easily get mental and physical disorders through using social media. People might think social media does not contribute to disorders. They argue that social media is good for mental diseases because it help them express their feelings or thought easily. Also, through social media, they can be more connected with each other. However, as stated above, if children become addicts, naturally we could think they have emotional instability. Social media offers limited real interaction, through online contact. On the Mental Health Blog, psychologist, Aric Sigman claimed “Spending too much time online could lead to social isolation, loneliness and a negative outlook. These types of psychological symptoms could eventually lead to more serious health concerns, such as heart disease, cancer and dementia.(Sigman)” Using social media disturbs make deep relationship with others. When they are using social media they do not need to move or be active. As a result, it leads to mental and physical disorders.
Social media can become handicap in our life. In this sense, social media can hinder people to improve their talents. People think social media is good place to show their talents or works what they did. For example, they argue people can share video clip what they playing the instruments or dancing or singing. However, if you are not good at those things and if you spend time to do social media, it would be hard to improve your talents. Using social media steals your time what really want to do. If you do not pay attention, your time would go very fast, and it could not be returned. If you read books, or study, exercise, or practice something that you want to do instead of using social media, it would be much better for you and your future life.
I conducted surveys about relationships between using social media and studying last semester. Most students answered using social media is not helpful for studying. Also, students who got good grades spent just a little time to use social media. These results can be adjusted to young children because they are more easily influenced by social media.

My Experience and Thoughts about Social Media
Over 500 million people use Facebook which is the largest online social network. Many people are using Facebook, Twitter, or other forms of social media. I started to use social media after I volunteered two years serving an LDS mission from 2009 to 2011. Before my mission, I was not interested in social media. Frankly, I did not even know what Facebook was, because another social media which is called Cyworld was more popular than Facebook in Korea. Social media has many advantages for people. For example, I can contact my friends who are living far away very easily. Facebook can make relationships with others easier. Russ Ouellette said, “Facebook allows us to keep in touch with colleagues, family members, and even distant relationships that would have normally had communications gaps of years”(19). Also, people can check social media at any time because technology has developed remarkably, especially, because you can easily access social media through a mobile phone.
However, in spite of these advantages, social media has some unfortunate side effects. I have used Facebook for only one year, and I can already see the negative affects it can have; wasting time using social media, hurting relationships, and increasing hypocrisy.
First of all, social networks compel us to spend a lot of time using them. As I mentioned previously, technology has progressed rapidly. We can access social networks wherever and whenever we want. We can access social media through a mobile phone in seconds. It is really convenient, but it can make us waste all our time if we are not careful. Many people spend a lot of time managing their social network page, or looking around on others pages. Last semester, I took a sociology class. In this class, I had a chance to conduct surveys for a project. My survey topic was the relationship between using social media and studying in college. Many students were using social media more than an hour a day. Surprisingly, one of the students was using Facebook for more than four hours a day. Adriana M. Manago conducted a survey as well and confirms by saying, “Overall, participants reported spending on average a little over an hour a day on Facebook. They reported checking into their accounts quite frequently; 80% report logging on to Facebook multiple times a day, and on average, they reported updating their status a few times a week”(374).
However, many people said social media is not helpful for studying. I was so surprised, and I could see that social media is very disruptive. I thought about what if we did not have social media. We could certainly focus on our studying more and spend our time more efficiently to improve and develop our talents, such as playing instruments, exercising, or reading books, but we would have to cut down our social media time.
Second, social networks distort our relationships. Humans are social animals. We cannot meet with everyone each day. We just do not have time. In this sense, social networks are really helpful to keep in touch with our friends, however, it is less meaningful because it is not real interaction. Many have hundreds of friends on Facebook, but they do not contact everyone, just a few people who they really like: Jake Martin said “So Facebook has, for all intents and purposes, become a way … to acquire as many “friends” as possible with whom I will never have to communicate again”( 23). Also, Maria Kalpidou describes the relationship between heavy Faceboook friending and social faliure, “More than 300 friends was related to low social attractiveness…of the profile owner”(188). Online relationships are often shallow and short. When people use just social networks without any physical meeting, they can easily feel loneliness. I read one study that said that people who use Facebook are generally less happy than people who do not use it. Relationships today have changed a lot, but intimate friends are come from real life, not online.
In addition to taking us from our studies and friends, social media can encourage hypocrisy. Online we can see everyone everyday. Without social media, it would be difficult to see those who live far away. We usually contact them or hear their news through social media. We see their pictures or read their messages on their “wall,” a sort of cyber bulletin board. As I mentioned before, we cannot physically see them, so people can act two-faced very easily. Jake Martin explained why people do these acts, “I want to win and will do whatever it takes to have more “friends” than anyone else, just so long as I don’t ever have to be in contact with them”(23). One day, I called a friend in Korea, and we talked about Facebook. He totally dislikes using Facebook, because he sees a lot of people posting hypocritical messages. He said many people are lying online. He avoids using social networks, but it does not mean he is anti-social. He is meeting friends and keeps in contact by using a cell phone. He just does not use social media. I have also felt that way at times. I think personal ostentation and vanity make this phenomena. For this reason, I like to meet someone physically because when I meet them, I can see their pure and undissembled features and characters.
Some of my friends believe that they can show more their real identify through Facebook. People have a desire to show to others what they did. When they fill this desire, they feel happy. People easily make a new relationship. In this view, social media have many advantatges. Jake Martin explained what advantages are,
It has proven to be a wonderful way to catch up with old friends from high school and college. It is also an easy way to keep up with those people in your life you just do not have the time to call or e-mail regularly...You can also use your various pictures to change your profile picture, the image that serves to project the message you want to send out to the universe, a sort of a cyber tattoo, if you will. This is your opportunity to show the world who you are, your existential moment;it is right there for everyone to see(22).
By using social media I have experienced that social media can play a strong influence in our lives. Using social media is unavoidable because everyone uses it and connects to each other through social media. I think we need to use social media with wisdom. When we do, we can live healthier and more efficiently.

Persuasive essay about social media

Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps us contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use it properly.

In discussions of social media, one controversial issue has been social is good to use for people. On the one hand, some people argue social media is okay to use freely. On the other hand, other people even contend social media is to use with regulation. My own view is that understanding and regulating the use of social media by people. Because social media can make us addicts, give us mental or physical disorder, and make us waste time.

First of all, social media, especially Facebook, are very addictive. People would say drug or alcohol is more addictive than social media or social media addiction is not big problems, but it is not true. There is a report of the social media addiction by University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business on the Fox News:

A team from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business recently conducted an experiment involving 205 people in Wurtzburg, Germany to analyze the addictive properties of social media and other vices. Participants in the week-long study were polled via BlackBerry smart phones seven times per day and asked to report when they experienced a desire within the past 30 minutes, and whether or not the succumbed to that desire. They were also asked to gauge each desire on a scale from mild to “irresistible.”

In the light of these facts, surely social media make addicts, and it is hard to escape. The problem is most people who have an addiction to social media don’t even realize it.

Second, people can get mental and physical disorders easily through using social media. People might think social media does not contribute to the disorders. They argued the social media is good for mental diseases because social media help express their feelings or thought easily. Also, through social media, they can be connected each other more. However, social media just offer limited meeting. They just meet on websites, not physical meeting. On the Mental Health Blog, the psychologist, Aric Sigman suggests “The use of social networking sites as opposed to face-to-face interaction could lead to major health problems.”

Later in the same article, he claimed in the British Journal The Biologist “Spending too much time online could lead to social isolation, loneliness and a negative outlook. These types of psychological symptoms could eventually lead to more serious health concerns, such as heart disease, cancer and dementia.”

Using social media disturbs us to make deep relationship with others. When they are using social media, we do not need to move a lot. It is okay just to stay at home. We do not need to active a lot. As a result, it leads naturally mental and physical disorders.

Third, social media doesn’t help for their studies or talents. People think social media is good places to show their talents or works what they did. For example, they argue people can share video clip what they playing the instruments or dancing or singing. It is, however, for people who already good to do those. If you are not good at those things and if you spend time to do social media, it would be hard to progress your talents. I did surveys about relationships between using social media and studying last semester. Most students answered using social media is not helpful to study. Also, students who got good grades spend just a little time to use social media. Using social media steals your time to what really want to do easily. If you do not pay attention, your time is gone very fast, and it cannot be returned. If you read books, study, exercising, practice singing, dancing or playing the instruments instead of using social media, it would be much better for you and your future life.
